Hello. I would like to introduce myself as Desmond. In February 2017, my life changed forever as I was involved in a motorcycle accident that resulted in a spinal injury that lead to paralysis from the chest down. I spent five months in hospital with the final three months spent in the Spinal Cord Unit at the Royal National & Orthopaedic Hospital.
I have received an endless amount of support from my family and that has given me the strength to overcome my injury. However, I also have a mental strength that has pushed me through the toughest of times while my positive thinking has allowed me to embrace my new life where I have learned to live independently and comfortably. Of course, this time in my life was tough and challenging but these hurdles and challenges turned me into the person I am today. I now live my life using the motto “It’s not what I cannot do, but what I can do”.
Everyone deals with their disability in their own way and this can differ from one person to the next. Some deal with it from birth and others have to deal with it from as recently as I have. In spite of this, I believe that life is what you make of it and life is certainly for living. Since my accident, I have taken up driving again and I now participate in Track and Field sports with the British Wheelchair Athletics Association. I plan on continuing to live life to the full and I want to experience as many different adventures as possible in the future.
My Disabilitychat.blog website has been designed as a hub where you can chat and listen as well as engage and share your experiences while inspiring others to grab life with both hands because that is what we are here to do.
I hope the site becomes a useful tool or resource for you to turn to when you need it because that is exactly what it has been created for.
